Is Podio being discontinued?
Last updated:
No. As of October 2026 there is no announcement that Podio is shutting down, and its owner, Progress Software, describes it as an independent product line with its own team and roadmap. The question keeps coming back for understandable reasons, though, and the honest answer to it is also a good reason to keep your own copy of your data. We build a Podio backup service, so keep that in mind as you read.
Why do people think Podio is going away?
Mostly because it has changed hands and faces several times:
- 2012: Citrix bought Podio, a Danish startup at the time.
- 2015: during a restructuring at Citrix, the press named Podio as a likely candidate to be cut. It wasn't.
- 2024: Progress Software agreed to buy ShareFile from Cloud Software Group, the group that owns Citrix, and Podio came with it.
- 2025: podio.com became a login page only, and Podio's website moved to progress.com/podio under the name Progress Podio.
Each of these looked like a step towards the exit, and each one started a wave of "is Podio dying?" threads. None of them ended with a shutdown.
What does Progress say about Podio's future?
In its 2025 year in review, published in January 2026, Progress wrote that in April 2025 Podio "was re-established as an independent product line within Progress", "with dedicated product ownership and a clearly defined roadmap". The plans it lists for 2026 are more automation, interface refinements and a selective look at AI features.
A few months earlier, announcing the move to progress.com, Progress had already written that Podio "remains a focused and empowered independent product line within Progress" and that "a dedicated team continues to enhance its stability, performance, and roadmap". That's a clear statement of continuity, not of a wind-down.
Should you be worried?
Not about a sudden shutdown: there's no sign of one. But any cloud tool can change its prices, plans or features, or be sold again, and you don't control when. The real question isn't whether Podio will close, it's whether you could leave with all your data if you ever had to. With Podio's own export, files and comments stay behind. If you're already thinking about leaving, read How to migrate from Podio.
What can you do today?
- Know where your data lives: which organizations, workspaces and apps matter to you.
- Keep a regular copy outside Podio, with files and comments. We compare the options in How to back up Podio.
- Open that copy once, so you know it works before you need it.
If you'd rather not handle it yourself, Podio Backup keeps a daily copy for you.
